The 2015 awards season is upon us, and while excellent, deserving titles like Boyhood, Birdman, and Selma are poised to dominate all of the shows, we wanted to reward some of the films and performances that deserve love, too.
As we look back on the movies of 2014, we’re proud to announce the first-ever VH1 Celebie Awards, which reward the best of the rest.
Best Girl in the Boys’ Club: Rose Byrne in Neighbors
All of the posters and previews for the riotous comedy Neighbors put the focus on Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, and Zac Efron’s abs, but the real star of the movie was Byrne. Rather than be relegated to the role of the nagging, no-fun wife that so often plagues male-driven comedies, Byrne played a cool, sexy, hilarious, and, most importantly, human mother and wife who could not only keep up with the boys, but ran circles around them.
Best Scene-Stealer: Jillian Bell in 22 Jump Street
Like Byrne in Neighbors, Bell one-upped her movie’s leading men Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. But she didn’t just outshine Tatum and Hill, she stole the whole damn movie. From her hilarious, dry delivery of zingers hurled at Hill to their unforgettable hotel room brawl, she gave the sequel its biggest belly laughs and solidified her place as a rising comedy star.
Best Tyler Perry Comic Relief in a Non-Tyler Perry Movie: Tyler Perry in Gone Girl
Gone Girl‘s terrifying leading lady Rosamund Pike might get some Oscar love for her work in the movie (and rightly so), and moviegoers were buzzing over Ben Affleck‘s blink-and-you’ll-miss-it on-screen nudity, but Perry deserves a lot of credit for his work in the razor-sharp adaptation. Not only did he show off some major acting chops, but he added some much-needed comic relief to the dark thriller. While there are wicked one-liners in the movie, nothing tops Perry, as infamous lawyer Tanner Bolt, declaring, “You are the most fucked-up people I’ve ever met and deal with fucked-up people for a living.”
Still haven’t seen Gone Girl? Here’s everything else you need to know.
